March 13, 2008 – *Ahem…* ;)

Hi Guys!
I was browsing through the latest edition of my beloved “The Week”
yesterday, and I found this little snippet. How could I not blog about it?!

“It is always the international year of this, or month of that”, says The Economist, but three cheers to the United Nations for declaring 2008 the International Year of the Potato. The UN hopes that the humble spud will contribute to its Millennium Development Goals by helping to alleviate poverty, improve food security and promote economic development. It’s a worthy aim, particularly since the potato – which Friedrich Engels declared to be the equzl of iron for its “historically revolutionary role” – has long been intertwined with economic growth and trade liberalisation. Britain’s industrial revolution was fuelled by a potato-fed population boom; and the spud made an important contribution to the establishment of free trade. It was not the eloquence of the arguments against the Corn Laws (which restricted grain importers to protect domestic wheat producers) that led to their repeal, but the tragedy of the 1845 Irish Potato Famine which forced the Government to reverse its position and establish free trade as a British policy. As the Duke of Wellington complained at the time, “rotten potatoes have done it all”.
So there we have it ~ it’s International Year of the Potato!
On top of it being my 42nd birthday next month, where I will officially be the ultimate answer of life, the universe and everything, I have official recognition from the UN that the humble potato is something to be appreciated and applauded.

Immigration, are you listening?! It says ‘International’! You hear??! That means potato, like, here AND there! International! Okay?
Hahahaha!!I included a few edukashual links in the article above, about the Millennium Development Goals, the Corn Laws, the Potato Famine, and so on. (Just click on the red bits). Now for the FUN stuff! I looked up ‘International Year of the Potato’ on the net, and found the site for the British Potato Council, which has a whole list of facts and figures about the amazing spud…
Where in the world…?
• The potato (Solanum tuberosum) originated in the Andes of South America, 8000 years ago. Today, potatoes are grown on an estimated 19,500,000 hectares around the world.
• The word ‘potato’ known in Spanish as ‘patata’ is derived from the word ‘batata’
• Asia and Europe are the world’s major potato producing regions, accounting for more than 80 percent of world production in 2006. While harvests in Africa and Latin America were far smaller, production was at record levels. North America was the clear leader in yields, at more than 40 tonnes per hectare.
• China is now the biggest potato producer, and almost a third of all potatoes are harvested in China and India alone.
• Asia consumes almost half of the world’s potato supply, but its huge population means that consumption per person was a modest 25 kg in 2005. The heartiest potato eaters are Europeans. Per capita consumption is lowest, but increasing, in Africa and Latin America.
• Potatoes are so rich in starch that it ranks as the world’s fourth most important food crop, after maize, wheat and rice.
• The potato plays a strong role in developing countries with its ability to provide nutritious food for the poor and hungry. It is ideally suited to places where land is limited and labour is abundant, conditions that epitomise the conditions in much of the developing world.
Closer to home…• The potato started being grown in London by 1597, and soon became popular in Ireland and Scotland
• Popularity for the potato came during the Industrial Revolution, when demand was created for cheap, energy-rich, non-cereal foods
• By 1948, production in England and Wales was peaking with almost 400 000 hectares under potato
• The UK is the 11th largest potato producing country
• In Britain we consume 94kg of potatoes per person, per year
Did you know…
1570 – The potato arrived in Europe1609 – European sailors take the potato to China
1719 – Potatoes arrive in USA
1801 – First French Fries served in America
1845 – The Irish potato famine
1853 – Potato crisp invented in New York
1952 – ‘Mr Potato Head’ toy invented
1995 – The potato is grown in space
2008 – United Nations International Year of the Potato
Now don’t you feel better for knowing that little lot?
For those of us who simply enjoy eating potatoes, there’s also a section of fab recipes ~ click here!
Here are a couple which I reckon will be getting a try out in my kitchen in the not too distant future… quick ‘n’ easy
…Turkey & Cranberry Baked Potato
Potato Hash
Potato & Vegetable Omelette
And last but not least, to end this blog about the wonderful, versatile, vegetable of vegetables, a little song… remember Sam and Gollum?
Okay guys! Get into that kitchen and get peeling!!

allieseven wrote on Mar 13, ’08 To this day when you order dinner in Ireland you will get three different styles of spuds without even asking for them. They’re not even on the menu. The waiter would simply say,”Oh, you’re in Ireland, no need to mention.” LOL
finneganswhacked wrote on Mar 13, ’08 You say potato, they say patata, let’s call the whole thing off! What awesome post. I guess I’d forgotten the content of protein. What did the potato say to the sheep? I only have eyes for ewe… sorry – feeling giddy about my favorite holiday…. Can’t wait to dig into my Shin Agus Guinness (poured over, you got it, boiled patatas) and for dessert, Marog Arain Agus Ime…hmmmm yum.

finneganswhacked wrote on Mar 13, ’08 Ok forget the arm twisting. I’m way easier than that. Bread and Butter Pudding (Marog arain agus Ime) “A popular recipe in the 18th and 19th century manuscript ‘receipt’ books, which makes full use of the excellent dairy produce so readily available throughout Ireland. This is my adaptation of the recipe from Lady Rivers’ manuscript ’receipt’ book, 1750, from County Cavan.” – By Claire Connery, from her book, A Cook’s Celebration of Ireland, In An Irish CountryKitchen. (Serves 4) 1 ½ cups milk 1 ¼ cups heavy cream Pinch of salt 1 teaspoon vanilla extract 5 large eggs ½ cup sugar 3 – 4 small bread rolls 1 tablespoon butter, melted ¼ cup golden raisins, soaked in 2 tablespoons cold water 4 tablespoons apricot jam 1 tablespoon water Confectioner’s sugar to dust 1 X ovenproof dish, 3 pint (6 cup) capacity approximately 1 ½ – 2 inches deep Oven Temperature 300 degrees F Oven time 25 – 30 minutes Combine the milk, cream and salt in a saucepan and heat to simmering. Stir in the vanilla extract. Mix together the eggs and sugar in a large bowl until well blended. Add the simmering milk and cream, stirring continually to form a smooth creamy mixture. Cut the rolls into ¼ inch slices and arrange these slightly overlapping in a lightly-buttered ovenproof dish. Sprinkle the drained and soaked raisins on top. Melt the butter and brush over the bread. Pour on the milk, cream and egg mixture and place dish in a roasting pan of simmering water and cook in the pre-heated oven for 25-35 minutes until the custard is just set. When cooked, remove from the water bath. Melt the apricot jam with 1-tablespoon water in a small saucepan, sieve and brush on top of the pudding. Sprinkle with icing sugar and serve warm, either on it’s own or with poached or bottled fruit, or ice cream.
mousepotato66 wrote on Mar 13, ’08 Is it bad etiquette to drool over your own keyboard?! Finn, if I don’t fit into my wedding dress next year, I’ll blame you! We’re taking it in turns to cook a meal to bring in for night shifts next week ~ I was going to do a butternut squash curry, but I could well end up doing dessert instead…
sanitizer wrote on Mar 13, ’08 §How nice, I raise my mashed potatoes in a toast to you and a wonderful blog, I sure know more about spuds now than ever before. That turkey and cranberry baked potato looks rather good.§
emmm1 wrote on Mar 13, ’08 Aw brilliant blog Sue. I just love my tatties. I could live on mashed tatties and gravy or baked tattie and cheese for ever. Over here there are so many varieties of spud and many of them have fabulous flavour. Not to mention real hash browns and beer battered fries. Theres a wee diner up the road from me that seels stuff called “homefries”. It’s a sort of big mess of fried potatoes – yummmmm. I loved the other ads too. Ah, nostalgia.
mykebodean wrote on Mar 14, ’08 I had taters with dinner tonight. Hey Sue all you need to do now is put yourself in a sack and hop of a pallet of potatoes that’s getting shipped to the US. If you get stopped once your over here, you have all your friends on here that will vouch for you that they’ve been friends with you AKA the Potato for at least a year or more.
skyerider wrote on Mar 14, ’08 We always eat taters with a big meal. We boil ‘em or mash ‘em or stick ‘em in a stew! Too funny…. Potato soup is yummmmee!
finneganswhacked wrote on Mar 14, ’08 LOL! Drool away. Your keyboard is easy to clean! (Did your know you can either wash it with your regular dishes in the dishwasher, or, in the sink? As long as it is rinsed thoroughly and allowed to dry, you’ll be in good shape!) As for the Wedding Dress, I guess congratulations are in order!!! As for the fit, may your tailor have so much material left over to make 3 dresses: one for your wedding, one for your 25th and one for your 50th and beyond. Now eat and enjoy!

One for us ladies – who KNOW!
Sent to me by my wonderful friend Murka ~ and far too good not to share!
This truly is the greatest letter ever written.
Subject: The best email…everThis is an actual letter from an Austin woman sent to American company
Proctor and Gamble regarding their feminine products. She really gets
rolling after the first paragraph. It’s PC Magazine’s 2007 editors’ choice for best webmail-award-
winning letter.Dear Mr. Thatcher,
I have been a loyal user of your ‘Always’ maxi pads for over 20 years
and I appreciate many of their features. Why, without the LeakGuard
Core or Dri-Weave absorbency, I’d probably never go horseback
riding or salsa dancing, and I’d certainly steer clear of running up a ND
down the beach in tight, white shorts. But my favorite feature has to be your
revolutionary Flexi-Wings. Kudos on being the only company smart
enough to realize how crucial it is that maxi pads be
aerodynamic I can’t tell you how safe and secure I feel each month knowing there’s a
little F-16 in my pants.Have you ever had a menstrual period, Mr. Thatcher? Ever
suffered from the curse’? I’m guessing you haven’t. Well, my time of the month is
starting right now. As I type, I can already feel hormonal forces
violently surging through my body. Just a few minutes from now, my
body will adjust and I’ll be transformed into what my husband
likes to call ‘an inbred hillbilly with knife skills.’ Isn’t the human body amazing? As Brand Manager in the Feminine-Hygiene Division, you’ve no doubt
seen quite a bit of research on what exactly happens during your
customers monthly visits from ‘Aunt Flo’. Therefore, you must
know about the bloat ing, puffiness, and cramping we endure, and about our intense
mood swings, crying jags, and out-of-control behavior. You
surely realize it’s a tough time for most women. In fact, only last week, my friend
Jennifer fought the violent urge to shove her boyfriend’s testicles
into a George Foreman Grill just because he told her he thought Grey’s
Anatomy was written by drunken chimps.? Crazy! The point is, sir, you of all people must realize that America
is just crawling with homicidal maniacs in Capri pants… Which brings
me to the reason for my letter. Last month, while in the throes of
cramping so painful I wanted to reach inside my body and yank out my uterus, I
opened an Always maxi-pad, and there, printed on the adhesive backing,
were these words: ‘Have a Happy Period.’Are you f***ing kidding me? What I mean is, does any part of
your tiny middle-manager brain really think happiness – actual smiling, laughing
happiness is possible during a menstrual period? Did anything
mentioned above sound the least bit pleasurable? Well, did it,
James?? FYI, unless you’re some kind of sick S&M freak, there will never be
anything’happy’ about a day in which you have to jack yourself
up on Motrin and Kahlua and lock yourself in your house just so you don’t
march down to the local Walgreen’s armed with a hunting rifle and a sketchy
plan to end your life in a blaze of glory. For the love of God, pull your head out, man! If you just have
to slap a moronic message on a maxi pad, wouldn’t it make more sense to say
something that’s actually pertinent, like ‘Put down the Hammer’ or
‘Vehicular Manslaughter is Wrong’, or are you just picking on us?Sir, please inform your Accounting Department that, effective
immediately, there will be an $8 drop in monthly profits, for I have
chosen to take my maxi-pad business elsewhere. And though I will
certainly miss your Flex-Wings, I will not for one minute miss your
brand of condescending bull shit. And that’s a promise I will keep.
Always.Best,
Wendi Aarons

March 4th, 2008 – Do you see what I see?
…. After speaking to Janet, and finishing my studies for the day, I had a bit of fun in Maniac World and looked at some of the visual illusion stuff they had up. Which leads me to the question… “do you see what I see?”
Years ago I had a book of Magic Eye pictures, which I was facinated by. I guess I was only fascinated because I could actually see them!
I found the following pictures off various sites and discovered that they work just as well on a computer monitor as they did from the book. Cool! The best way to get these to work, is to stick your face right up close to the screen, and sort of look through the image, like you’re trying to see what’s behind the screen on your desk. Let your eyes go out of focus, and after a few seconds the 3D image should pop up as if my magic. It’s so neat!! Then once your brain is used to seeing the 3D, you can slowly pull your head back and just sit gazing at it and grinning your face off! (Well, that’s what I do, anyway!
)
So, here are a few of the best I found. Go on, have a go! You know you want to!
Hidden Lion
Hidden Vortex
Hidden Nature (brilliant!
)
Hidden Saturn (One for Trudi! Hi Trudi!
)
Hidden Rose (my favourite!
)
And last but not least, simply because it’s so NEAT! ~ a swimming
Hidden Shark
Right! That’s your lot! Just look at the time, again!

Time to say g’nite babe
(yep, we’re talking as I type
), and g’nite to you guys! I’m off to bed ~ dentist early in the morning!
(that’s what I’ll look like when he’s finished
)Have fun, and play nice.

Feb 01, 2008 – No, Not Abducted By Aliens! And Only *Sometimes* Nekkid. ;P
Hi Guys!
It’s been a couple of weeks since I last blogged ~ as most of you know, Shane’s currently over here with me on a much needed three week vacation
, 2/3 of which has passed now. He said it’d be a good idea to check in with you guys, and he’s right ~ I’ve been neglectful of both my 360 and Multiply pages. Other things taking up my time, don’t you know…
Well, this visit is a bit different to the last two, where he was visiting England for our first time together last February, then my return trip to the States in August. This has been much more ‘private’ somehow ~ we’re so comfortable with each other and our relationship is so established and committed, it’s more sort of settled and less full of the excitement that goes with first visits to a new country. So I’ll forgive you if your eyes start to droop and I hear gentle snoring in the background if you’re reading this…

Much of the reason for this visit, which was literally talked about and decided in a couple of days, was Shane’s need to simply get away for a bit of R&R ~ and that’s exactly what he’s been doing! Mostly online, catching up with his own friends in the blog world and playing with youtube…
(could he look any more relaxed than that?!
), plus reading through the moutains of ‘New Scientist’ journals I have dotted around the flat. It’s been great to see him just having the time to spend…
This last two weeks I’ve still been heading off to work for my shifts, and the girls at work have been great ~ letting me hand over to the following shift first so I can get an early dart home (thanks girls!
You’ve no idea how much that’s been appreciated!), and The Boss, Sue, giving me today which she was due off and going in to do my shift for me. I work some wonderful people! Next week I was originally due to work nights, but I’ve been given a holiday week instead. Too cool!I’ve managed to get some study time in, and Shane’s been involved in that too ~ going over tests with me and discussing the various questions and answers. I’m a little behind, but nothing that I can’t catch up on.

Last time Shane came over, we more or less shut ourselves away from the rest of the world (not surprising ~ it was our first time together!
). But this time we’re including some of the social round into his time here. A couple of evenings ago we visited my friends Jean and Tony at their home, and tonight we’re off out for a few drinks in a local pub with Maddy, a girl I trained with, and her partner Gary. On Sunday we’re off round to Eric’s for dinner and a good gab, and hopefully next Tuesday we’re getting together with Sara (Retro_Gal) ~ I think she’ll hang draw and quarter me if she doesn’t get to meet Shane this time!So what else has been going on? Our first trip to the movies last night to see ‘I Am Legend’ with Will Smith ~ brilliant movie and well worth recommending.
I took the camera in case an opportunity came up, but all I ended up taking was a goofy shot on the bus home…
We’ve been sharing cookery together much more than last time round, and I’ve been loving it watching Shane eating regular, decent meals for a change! Last time we just ‘picked’ a lot, but we’ve actually been experimenting and coming up with some decent food over the last two weeks. He’s introduced me to pesto, which I’d never tried before and am now determined to have a go at making myself ~ a trip to the supermarket today included pine nuts, a couple of bags of fresh basil, olive oil and parmesan. And on my kitchen windowsill I have a healthy basil plant happily getting accustomed to its new home.
So, maybe not the most exciting or scintillating of blogs I’ve ever written. But suffice to say, having a less frenetic time together is going down very well with us both.
It’s ‘homely’ and just so comfortable! No doubt we’ll get some more photos taken to post, but this is about it for now
We still have a week left…

I’ll be catching up with you guys individually as time allows ~ I’ve not forgotten about you! Just sharing time with my man.
You guys have fun, and play nice… see you soon.

Sentimentality. *Sigh* Nov 4th, 2007 – 360 Testimonials
It seems that testimonials are the only feature of 360 that we don’t have here on Multiply, but that’s no reason to be downhearted! They can be saved here, just like everything else
.
So, this ‘virgin blog’ on Multiply is my safe storage for all the testimonials I’ve received from you guys, and to say a big
Thank You!
for them all!
I was going to put them in the ‘review’ section, a good idea which has been used by Kerry. But I changed my mind ~ I’d sooner put them here, so I can include the avatars you guys were using over there on 360. (Thank heaven for Photobucket’s bulk uploader!
)In no particular order ~ it’s just how you guys appeared in the friends’ list this morning… and thank you all, again!

I’ve pierced my nipple. :D
THIS was Shane’s idea, I hasten to add! “You’ve GOT to do a Tit House out of that one!” when he saw the original unfinished/unpainted gourd. So I did. Hehehe.
Listed on Etsy today – and I’m being cheeky and asking $50 for it. We’ll see what happens, lol!

June 24, 2011 – “We Have a Very Important Guest”
Transferring my “Zeebers Chronicles” over from M’Ply to Xanga – no WAY I want to lose these, lmao! It was TOO much fun!

~*~*~
I got a phone call from the Post Office yesterday lunchtime from one of the girls working there. “Mrs Varner, I don’t mean to alarm you, but I really think you need to come and pick up whatever mail you have in your box immediately! It’s quite unnerving…” She sounded so alarmed, we jumped in the car and dashed over there at once!!Well, what a commotion! Even before I stepped in the door I could hear muffled banging and crashing about, and an irate, funny sounding little voice (not so little right then, I can tell you!) screeching and a-hollering… Omigod! WTF??!
“LET ME OUT!! LET ME OUT!! I’M SUFFOCATING IN HERE!!”
Tentatively I put my key in the lock and slowly opened the door. Well, tried to! The minute the lock turned…
Out crashed ZEEBERS!!!

WOOT!!! For those of you unfamiliar with this little guy, Zeebers, or “Lil’ Z”, is the legendary Traveling Troll. He lives in Georgia with our good friend Tapewormz, and since November last year has been on a tour of States near and far, visiting Multiply friends for a week or so at a time and enjoying the different lifestyles, sights and sounds we all have to offer. Once the USA visits are exhausted, he’s even venturing abroad! Lucky little bugger…
But for now he’s HERE IN THORNVILLE!! WOOT!!

We collected the box full of all the presents he’s picked up along the way (which were strewn everywhere in the Post Office!), and brought him home.
Zeebers’ first view of where he’s staying, with us…
“Wow… all the way up THERE?” Yes hon… all the way up there.
Welcome to the Tree Farm, Zeebers.

I’ll be posting a photo album of Zeebers’ first day here yesterday, in a minute or two… link will be added in my comment here on the blog.
We had SUCH a fun time, and I’m thoroughly looking forward to being Zeebers’ host for the next few days! (And many thanks to our neighbour, Roger, who has lent me his Olympus. My camera decided to go kaput on me today… bloody brilliant timing, not! But I can continue to record Zeebers’ adventures on his, while kicking mine all around the farm…
