WOOHOO!!!!! Okay, yes, I'm a bit drunk and this photo of Shane's email (to my mind) doesn't do justice to just how buzzing I am right now, even if it is 3o'clock in the morning. But ~ well... read on...

*Ditches my moustache and sombrero in the trash can* ~ VISA APPROVED!!!!!
We've just been chatting for nearly five hours and I'm on my way to bed. But Shaneknows I won't be able to go without passing on the NEWS!!! He has to call at the Post Office in the morning to pick up the paper documents and find out what we do next. But hey!!
I’m finally getting around to writing my final blog about my trip to the States, a kind of ‘round~up’ if you like! I got so many comments from you guys, asking me various questions about what I thought of America and so on, and I’ll try and answer as many as possible! I did intend to keep a daily diary while I was there… but unfortunately it only lasted for a few days ~ I was far too busy having a good time! Here’s what I DID write, anyways… (grab a and a plate of sarnies… it’s a little long, is this…) (just to let you know... the diary is typed up exactly as I wrote it... there is a tiny bit of bad language once or twice...)
Getting There...
August 8th, 2007. 08.30am.
Eric was good to his word and we set off for Manchester at 6am. Still misty that early, and good speed all the way. Left him £10 in the van.
Now it’s 8.30, and I’m checked in already! Flight #US0735 due to board at 10.10am, so I’m now sat outside in glorious sunshine enjoying a last cigarette - or two - or three!
It turns out I only have to pick my case up (20kg on the dot - bathroom scales DO work for checking!) once, at Philadelphia. Then I won’t see it again ‘til Columbus ~ woohoo!!
It also turns out I could have brought my Zippo, but with - a throwaway is fine.
Cards and more cards to fill out - declarations, address for the first night’s stay, contact phone numbers, etc etc - flying international ain’t what it used to be many long years ago!
A good start to the journey. Now I just want to get boarded and SLEEP!
11.25am.
Just now seated on the plane, so we’re obviously going to be late taking off. I just hope we make up the lost time on the way - between landing at Philly and leaving on the connection to La Guardia, there’s only a two hour gap - and I have to pick up and recheck my baggage…
*sigh* - oh well, nothing I can do about it so I may as well forget it and enjoy the flight!
11.55am
Next in line for the runway. I’ve got the squealing, crying baby in the seat right in front of me. Oh God.
Noon.
We’re flying!! Perfect takeoff. The baby’s quiet, and all’s well with the world
Shane, I’m on my way!!
3pm.
Flying over Greenland is amazing! Peaks of up to 13,000 feet on this side of the plane.
4.20pm.
The clouds below us look like a thick blanket of cottonwool snow covering the entire world. I’m back to being in love with flying again - no nerves, no panicky feelings, just loving it.
And no announcement that the flight is going to be delayed after taking off late; fingers crossed I’ll make the connection to La Guardia - tho’ 2 hours still seems like cutting it a bit fine…
13.10 (local time from now on)
The Captain’s just announced we’ll be landing in an hour and 20 minutes - 14.30pm = 50 minutes late. Fuck. We’ll have to see what happens…
Finished reading Skadi’s book ‘Always after Thieves Watch’ - brilliant!!
15.30pm
Okay, arrived in Philly at got thru immigration with NO problems whatsoever ~ it DOES help to have a completed immigration card Shane!hehehe!, baggage collection and recheck, here at the gate for La Guardia (due to fly at 15.55), and it’s - DELAYED. Til 16.30. So it’ll be more headless chicken at the other end to get the flight to Columbus, and I’m MELTING….
Just spent my first $2.70 on a Lipton’s Iced Tea and a packet of Lifesavers. Don’t know which one I need most!
Doing great with the nicotine patch, only it’s starting to itch like a bastard thing already…
Sent Shane’s text to remind him to bring his cell phone with him to the airport!
15.55.
Spoke to a very nice lady about what to do if I miss the connection at La Guardia, which I WILL. She’s arranging to get my suitcase off this flight, and give me a fresh ticket direct from here to Columbus! It won’t leave til 8.30pm, and arrive in Columbus 22.18 which is a bit of a bummer.
On the upside, I JUST SPOKE TO MY BABE ON HIS CELL!! To let him know.
Fingers crossed, NO MORE HITCHES!!
17.30.
I’m bored out of my skull. Since arriving at Gate A6 1 ½ hours ago, I’ve had a coffee and a sandwich and started to read another book, ‘One Red Paperclip’ by Kyle MacDonald. He starts off with a red paperclip, and advertises it to trade, for anything bigger and better. Then he wants to trade again, and again, etc, until he eventually trades for a house! It’s funny, and a great idea, but 1 ½ hours in and I’m fed up of reading. And it’s another 2 ½ hours before my flight starts boarding. There’s another one before mine at this gate, going to Puerto Rico and boarding this minute. I envy them.
I think I’m just tired. Up 18 ½ hours now, with another 5 or so to go before I finally land at Columbus. My eyes are burning and I’m bored to fuck.
And I’d rip someone’s arm off for a cigarette.
18.10.
I cleaned ink off my fountain pen earlier with a tissue, and shoved the tissue back in my pocket. I just blew my nose. The ink wasn’t dry yet. Bugger!
Squealing baby #2 just arrived…
18.15.
Just been for a wee - as I leant forward to grab my backpack, the toilet automatically flushed, all over my bum! If I didn’t know better I’d expect someone to jump out and shout “Smile! You’re on Candid Camera!”
21.15.
Should have taken off at 20.35. Instead we’re late because the cleaners were late getting the plane sorted after the previous flight. We’re sat on tarmac waiting to take off. Looks like possibly another hour added to the journey altogether. By the time I collect my case, I’ll be lucky to see Shane by midnight. I can’t say I’m impressed with US Airways.
I bet they’ll lose my case.
Being there!
9th August ‘07 08.00
They DIDN’T lose my case, and the flight arrived on time!! WONDERFUL to be back with Shane again!! WOOHOOO!!
Our first night in the rig last night… enough said…
Beautiful morning - a bit misty yet, with the sun coming up over a soy bean field where we’re parked. It’s going to be a Good Day!
11th August ‘07 09.45am.
Arrived at Bethlehem, PA with a delivery, so I’m catching this up a bit while Shane waits to drop his trailer.
On Thursday we did a couple of deliveries, ending in Coal City, Illinois. To be honest, the day sort of passed me by, probably as I was still knackered after travelling Wednesday. Bits I DO remember well - waking up to the sound of thousands of crickets chirping away in the soy bean field we were parked by. Finding some wild asparagus for breakfast - bloody yummy! Setting off on the highway from Ohio, and being amazed at the vast cornfields - just like you see kids running through in terror in the movies to escape the boogeyman! This part of Ohio is really FLAT - just seemed to stretch out for miles on either side. And LOADS of rigs - trucking really is BIG business over here.
I remember us making a quick stop along the way for some ‘love in the afternoon’… mmmmmm…. Say no more!
I don’t remember much about going through Illinois, but no doubt we’ll be seeing it again. I ended up crashing out on the bunk pretty early, about 8.30pm maybe? And spending a hot, sticky night tossing and turning a bit.
Now, yesterday!! That’s a different story! I woke early, about 4.30am, when Shane’s alarm went off. He had a bit of extra sleep before we got on the road for a delivery in PA. The drive was a long, long, long one, and it was AWESOME! Riding through the mountains of Pennsylvania… scenery absolutely breathtaking. Online chatting with Shane’s daughter all afternoon - she’s SO excited about meeting me!! And me her!!
We stopped overnight at a Petro truckstop in Milton which had showers (thank heaven!) and a buffet restaurant which was GREAT. Slept well.
We were up early on Sunday morning and spent a half hour wandering through the woods at the back of the truck stop. Misty mountain tops and misty woods - very LOTR!
Drove home to Columbus via Maryland and West Virginia. Me getting more and more nervous about meeting Shane’s daughter!
Shane’s Daughter
We arrived at her home in the late morning/early afternoon. My very first sight of her, which I’ll remember as long as I live, was as I was getting out of the van and turned round - and there she was. Eyes WIDE open, and she almost leapt on me for the most MASSIVE hug EVAR!! Why the hell I’d been so nervous, I’ll never know. She is absolutely beautiful… same build as her dad, long blonde hair, and sweet and bright as anything! We came inside for a while and met Kitty, a fat lump of ginger fluff, soft as you like.
Shane’s daughter played flute for us for a while, a new one as the old had bashed keys, so we were the first to hear her play her first scale on the new. She is so NOT shy! After we’d gotten settled with each other, and those initial nerves had gone, we headed off out in the van. Spent some time at Don Pedros for a meal, went to the library and wrote my first proper America blog while she watched and giggled, then did some shopping at Walmart. The best thing we picked up was ~ my engagement ring! Chosen by Shane’s daughter, so now, as of Sunday 12th August, me and Shane are Officially Official!!
After Walmart, we headed off to a nearby motel to spend the night and exchange gifts. She gave her dad a pony band (he’s wearing it now, it suits him!) and me a travel coffee mug - cool!! For us both, she’d drawn and coloured a mystical picture with a dragon for me, and a centaur for Shane. I remembered her asking AGES before, what my favourite mythical creature was, and telling me Shane’s was a centaur… now I know why. We now have our first picture for framing and hanging in our future home.
We had a quiet evening. Shane’s daughter reading more of her stories from her journal ( she has such an imagination!), and showing me the pictures she’d drawn to illustrate them. Then she had a go at drawing me - no butt (thank you!), chunky calves and raccoon eyes! She did a good job!
On Monday morning we woke up early. She had track at 10am, so we had a wake~up call at 6am to give us time to wake up, get ourselves into gear, and enjoy breakfast at Waffle House before heading to her school. I’ve discovered I LOVE grits! I thought they’d be sort of like pork scratchings, kind of dry and, well, GRITTY, but they’re more like porridge. Made with corn, buttery and gorgeous - yummy!
We arrived at school early enough to have a guided tour - being still the holidays it was largely empty. A few girls were there practising cheerleading. A good few had come for track, and Shane’s daughter’s eyes lit up when she saw one of her obviously close friends.
She ran a mile in about 8 minutes - didn’t stop to walk once along the way! She’s a good ‘un!
After track, we went to visit Shane’s parents. We didn’t see too much of his mum as she was going out, but his dad seems like a nice, gentle man. Hopefully we’ll get the chance to meet up for lunch/dinner while I’m here.
And that’s as far as I got with the diary. There was just too much to see, and talk about, and simply enjoy, to find the time to write about it all! Most of the best stuff has already been blogged about, along with slideshows and video clips etc. So the rest of this is more just snatches of observations… little bits and pieces that I jotted down quickly as and when I felt like...
1) I can balance with a funnel over a gallon jug like no~one's business!
2) Cornfields are BRILLIANT! I kept getting this urge to run through one... so I did...
3)Chewing tobacco is well, weird! I had a go just so I could say I had, and it tasted OK but my god it burns! Once and once only for me!
4) Truck stop coffee is pure ROCKET fuel!! And you can even buy extra espresso shots to add to it... bloody hell! I'd never been so caffeinated in years ~ probably explains why I haven't gotten to bed before 2am since I got back here!
5) It's REALLY hard taking pictures from a fast moving rig. But I think we did okay!
6) The rig is like a Tardis ~ looked tiny from the outside, but there was plenty of space inside. I was impressed! Two double~sized bunks, loads of storage, it was neat.
7) Lake Michegan did NOT want to be photographed! Thank heaven for digitial photography so you can wipe off all the useless shots!
8) Waking up on that first morning is something I'll never forget.
9) I couldn't believe just how fast the weather and temperatures could change ~ from waking up hot, sticky and bleugh one morning, to waking with my butt frozen and reaching for a sweater the next.
10) Pennsylvania mountains... I know I know, I've gone on and on about them! But I've never seen scenery like it before in my life. Absolutely breathtaking ~ especially as the sun's going down, and despite bug~splatters! If you ever get the chance, go there!
11) I agonised for weeks before flying over about what to do to keep my hair tidy, what make~up to bring, etc etc. (Yeah, I know! But I'm a girlie afterall!) In the end I went for 3 weeks with NO make~up, and only washed my hair three times. And you know what? It didn't matter one little bit.
12) Showers at the truck stops were fun.
13) There are patches of wild asparagus growing along the roadside all over the place, and it is DELICIOUS!
14) Sweat bees tickle, and their bums wiggle up and down. They're kind of cute!
15) Shane wouldn't ask for rolling papers for me ~ apparently it's very rare to actually smoke rollies in the States, and buying papers indicates that you smoke something a little more, erm, illegal! So I bought my own... not half so good as our Rizla over here, but they did the job. They don't give you any warning strip that you're about to run out, and there weren't many to a packet either. I hope that changes before I move for good!
16) My babe has a good piece. As confirmed by a guy at one of the delivery stops we made. I think he and I were thinking about different things though..
17) Wisconsin makes GREAT chocolate fudge cheese!! So much for the diet!
19) I have a FAMILY!!! And I couldn't be any happier!!
20) A 'sloppy joe' is NOT a sweater.
21) You really DO get jacked up on Mountain Dew! Man, that stuff is wonderful!
22) PA spring water is the most delicious water EVAR!
23) When American's say "Have a nice day!", they really do sound like they mean it!
24) If you leave chocolate fudge cheese in a hot rig for a day or two, it makes a great spread for a butty ~ especially with peanut butter...
25) Chicago rush hour is pure MENTAL. To be avoided like the plague!
26) My babe's alarm on his cell phone makes me want to SCREAM.
27) Writing a blog on the road is damn near impossible! I think I mentioned kangaroos in heat somewhere along the line, 'cos that's what the laptop was jumping round like at 65mph. Badkarma, THANK YOU! for this picture ~ you are a STAR!!
28) Truck stops are numerous, clean, light, bright, very well stocked, and serve some GOOD food! I was pleasantly surprised at just how good they were, everything you need apart from the bed to sleep in. And 99% of the staff were courteous and friendly, as were most of the people I met over there. YAY! For truck stops! A really pleasant surprise!
29) Ravioli with meatballs, cold out of the can, is delicious.
30) Walmart is EXACTLY like ASDA, only bigger! I LOVED it!
31) I can't WAIT to be living in America for good! To start a life with Shane and his daughter, and to never be separated again. Being back in the UK SUCKS.
32) NCLEX, Immigration ~ BRING IT ON!!
33) 99% of roadkill is massive chunks of blown~out tyres, which litter the highways everywhere! I only saw a handful of indistinguishable squashed things in the road. Phew.
34) All the sore spots on my feet from wearing Doc Martens at home 24/7 have healed up, after living in flip~flops for three weeks.
35) My babe can turn a rig on a sixpence! Watching drivers backing their trucks into narrow gaps between two others was fascinating ~ some of them made ME sweat!
36) I'm so used to the sound of trucks idling their engines overnight to run airconditioning, I'm gonna need a fan on in my bedroom for a while or I'll never sleep...
37) One day I WILL get used to Shane's daft jokes!
38) Wendy's Baconator's are the BEST burgers I've EVAR eaten!
39) Tent caterpillars are AMAZING. They build these massive 'tents' and live in them in their dozens, and you see trees everywhere with these huge structures draped all over them Destructive little buggers... they actually kill the tree sometimes.
40) Traffic jams are as much fun as truck stop showers.
41) German Village in Columbus, Ohio, was a fantastic place to visit! Bohemian, laid~back... I absolutely loved it. It was there that we visited the BookLoft and saw The Actors' Theatre do Shakespeare in the Park... that was my favourite evening of the entire trip! Here's a link for German Village, it's NEAT! Click here!
42) Armour~plated bugs are no match for a 40 ton rig! (Though one little bugger had well and truly left his mark ~ still there after three weeks, wow!)
43) Google Earth Pro is ideal for using as a work tool for truckers, if they can get their laptops set up for on the road. Brilliant! (Plug, plug!)
So that's some of the little bits and pieces that I jotted down along the way. A few of you have asked what I thought of the economy (cheap!), the people (wonderful!) and the cities etc... well, the cities were usually just there to be driven through on the way to and from deliveries in the rig, so I only got to see skylines and underpasses and outskirts etc. MY America was largely rolling through the highways and byways, catching the view from the window as we passed. And I loved every minute of it!
There WERE a couple of defining moments for me.
The first was the evening in Schiller Park, watching the play with Shane and his daughter... the three of us cuddled up together on her sleeping bag, so close to each other... and me feeling that THIS moment is one I never will forget ~ it's RIGHT, and where I belong.
And I think it was the last Friday night, looking for a truck stop in Indiana in the evening, on the way back to Ohio... the whole thing just seemed so BIG! I mean, I KNEW America was a big place, but that evening it was like it actually sank in for me... the land stretched away for miles, and the sky had a whole new vastness and clarity that we just don't SEE here in the UK... It was amazing. I'm never going to complain again about having to walk 2 minutes round the corner in the rain to pick up a pint of milk, or that it takes me 20 minutes to get to work on the bus! That's a piece of cake!
And finally, here's a few videos of us driving along the Ohio Turnpike, heading home. And Ohio, with Shane and his daughter, is where home IS for me now... I KNOW I'll be happy there for the rest of my life...
This is one of the nicest blogs I've ever read. I'm so glad you liked America that much. I just KNEW you'd think it was big! And the negative image we seem to have in the world press... I'm glad you found out first hand how MOST Americans are quite nice.
I especially love the picture of your engagement ring. Your face is absolutely glowing, and I think that says it all. Oh, Sue-Mouse, I'm really glad you're coming to live among us!
HELP!*snickering*she's gotten me drunk and taken avanatage of me... and i coulden't be more delighted i'v ebeen working my tail off,and after the flight over,i had just enough energy left to do my baby right...... picturescensored tommorow it's just right-as it should be

Well, it's 3am on Monday morning, and I'm stuck here at work when I'd rather be right at home in my little flat. Those of you who've been following what's been happening with me and Shane
know that he arrives TOMORROW!!!!!! Oh my God...
Since we first talked about meeting, and the flights were booked, the time has flown by SO fast!! It's over a month since I started counting the days in my blast (WAY more fun than marking off a calendar!), and I can't believe that he's actually going to be HERE, in England, with me, in only a few hours. Nervous? Me? Too bloody right I am!! My stomach has been doing somersaults all day today, and trying to eat anything has been like trying to force dry crackers down my throat! (Bleugh!) I've drunk so much coffee that I'm swishing as I walk, and Golden Virginia should be giving me shares in their company, the amount of ciggies I'm going through.
I'm running on adrenaline!! And it's a good job I have plenty, 'cos there's still a lot to do before he gets here. I'm going straight to the supermarket after work, for groceries, beers, and anything else that might take my fancy... a few scented candles perhaps? Baby oil? Any suggestions?! Hehehehe.....
And the flat still needs a bit of a spruce too. Working the night shifts this week hasn't left much time to do anything during the days except sleepand dream!! My mate Nicola (of the Grand Day Out in Lark Lane fame) has decided that I can't possibly be left on my own at such a time, and is coming round to "help keep me calm" for the day... that's a laugh!! She's almost as excited as I am!! I've told her she's more than welcome... she can don a pair of rubber gloves too, and scrub the cooker while I get to grips with the bathroom! And any of you guys who fancy helping out, I'm sure I can find something for you to do! "Many hands make light work" as they say...
I'm hoping to get everything sorted early, so I can get a decent night's sleep... Shane'sflight arrives at 08.55am tomorrow morning at Manchester airport, and my neighbour Eric has offered to run me there to pick him up. It's a bit of a distance, about an hour's drive, so we'll be heading out about 7.30am to try and beat the traffic. And of course, I'll need time to get myself looking gorgeous before we set off, so I'll be up at about, oh I don't know, 7.15?! It'll be more like 5am... I know I'll be awake at the crack of dawn!!
Anyways, it looks like I'll be "AWOL" for a couple of weeks from 360 ~ and I'll MISS you guys! But I'm sure Shane will find a way to put the smile back on my face!! So you all have fun, be good, and I'll look forward to being back soon to tell you all about it. (Well, maybe not all...!!)
See you soon!!
(p.s... taking a second glance at that picture, I hope Shane realises it's Liverpool he's headed for ~ not bloody Africa!!)
Shane's favourite... "Ramble On" ~ Led Zep. (I think your rambling days have come to an end babe... I'm right here...)
well I am going to for sure be missing you but...I know you can't help but check in every once in awhile...if you want I can send messages and leave blog comments that sound english..."bloody hell" *snickers* I am WAY excited for you, holy cow! are you taking time off?

"Hermit and Mousie"
Someone told me recently that they wished for me, a man worthy of me. (you know who you are!Thank you... ). I don't know about 'worthy of me', I'm not that full of myself. But in you Hermit, I have a man I hope to be worthy of. You're better than any Christmas present I could have hoped for... and I love you.
H = Humanity E = Environment R = Reality M = Majick I = Integrity T = Truth.

Is it because its not free? Homer: Yes, thats why we are poor. Bart: So what can we do to be rich? Marge: Work hard dear. Homer: Yes, son, we should work harder, Oh no! Turn the TV on! They are about to announce the lottery tickets. *Bart and homer jumps on the couch* Bart: Homeboy, what if we get the million dollars from that lottery? Homer: Bart, with $10,000, we'd be millionaires! We could buy all kinds of useful things like...love!
I know its not apt for the moment. but I like homer. ^_^ (Hey! don't look away, had to say something, didn't I?)

I can name quite a few people who met online and met up for real and hit it off and got married! I found the love of my life online too and although we are worlds apart, our love conquers the distance.
i never knew something like it could happen. i was pesimistic about all these at first. but then we started talking and then we realized we liked talking to each other and we missed each other if we didnt talk for a while and then...well you get the picture lol.
How sweet. And not a word was spoken. That's so loverly. Will one of you one day be trying to get to the church on time while the other awaits? Bet it was a Foggy Day in London Town as those fingers were flying on IM. Sure does beat walking down Lime Street in Liverpool, say what? So, serve a half a bitter but bitter never be and continue on in loveland where all the hugs are free.
This brought me to tears honey...Happy ones...I am so Happy for you..reading your blog gave me chills...what a Christmas gift. He has found the best thing on earth. You my love. Please keep me posted. I wish I could hug you babe. All my best to you... (P.S. Have you too "officially" met yet? Maybe I better save this for private messages Love you Sue. Oh I am so happy for you. ~P.L.
~*~ How exciting and wonderous for you both ! I wish you both all the best ! Take care of each other and have a marvelous Holiday season ! Your both ringing in the new year with the "MAGIC OF LOVE" ! Hugs ~*~ @--[------
